SUMMARY:'Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape' | Andy Holden LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Through close observation of the adventures of well-known characters including Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote\, artist Andy Holden has adapted ten laws of cartoon physics to create a theory of art and the world we now inhabit. The first of which is that “anybody suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of their situation.” Holden\, who first learned to draw by copying cartoons\, argues that the golden age of this discipline offered “a prophetic glimpse” into the world in which we live. Studying cartoons\, he suggests\, will help us better understand the events that are shaping our present day\, not least the moments of financial crisis and the recent election and referendum results. \nIn this special live performance\, Holden is transported into the cartoon-world via green screen technology. This leap into a series of familiar landscapes unfolds an astonishing journey through the history of animation\, critical theory\, physics and art\, before arriving at contemporary politics and Holden’s theory that the world has now come to resemble a cartoon. \nPrice:\nAdult: $15\nSeniors and Students: $10\nUnder 18: Free\nEngage and Immerse Members: $5 \nReserve your tickets here.\nLimited availability \nPlease note: Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape will be closed Friday\, November 9\, in order to set up and rehearse for the evening performance. \nWatch the trailer for Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape:

SUMMARY:Members' Event: Studio visit with Akin Collective featuring artists Oliver Pauk and Michael Vickers
DESCRIPTION:Open to mocamigos members and up ($150+) \nJoin us as we visit the studios of visual artists Oliver Pauk and Michael Vickers followed by a tour of AkinCollective. Light refreshments will be served. \nRSVP to Anne Rawn arawn@museumofcontemporaryart.ca by March 17\, space is limited. \nExact location details will be provided closer to the date of the studio visit. \nAkin Collective provides studio and shared workspace to over 160 artists\, designers and creatives working across almost 20\,000 square feet of studio space in 4 main Toronto hubs. Its sister organization\, Akin Projects is a registered nonprofit that offers free and low-cost creative programming and professional development opportunities to members of Toronto’s artistic and cultural community and to the public at large. \nLearn more about Akin Collective in their recent Toronto Star feature: ‘Akin Collective buys artists space and time’ \nOliver Pauk’s work centres around photographic\, sculptural\, and video-based elements straddling the boundary between physical and digital art. His specific interest lies in exploring the ways in which digitally captured objects can be translated back into the physical realm. Because objects in a digital state can fluctuate between mediums when edited and reformatted\, Pauk engages with this idea by presenting his work across various mediums. Oliver holds an Honours BA in Economics from the University of Toronto. Recent exhibitions include Volta 12 Basel; Mercer Union; Art Gallery of Ontario; Angell Gallery; Patrick Mikhail Gallery; Toronto International Film Festival; and The Gardiner Museum. \nMichael Vickers is a Toronto-based artist with a practice that works in the space between sculpture\, painting and installation. His recent work investigates the limits of different materials and presentation methods – painted\, curled and bent forms made of various painted aluminums and steels\, etched and engraved stone and marble works\, and installations that activate the exhibition space in different ways.  Vickers holds an MA in Art History from the University of Toronto and an Honours BA in Visual Arts & Communications and has exhibited locally and internationally- including presentations at Volta Basel\, Mercer Union\, Clark House Mumbai\, Division Gallery\, Patrick Mikhail Gallery and installations at the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Gardiner Museum. \n  \nImage: Oliver Pauk (right) and Michael Vickers (left)\, visual artists and collaborators on management of the Akin Collective. SUMMARY:mocamigos Event: Studio visit with artist Nep Sidhu
DESCRIPTION:Open to mocamigos members \nJoin us for a visit to artist Nep Sidhu‘s  Leslieville studio and some light refreshments. \nRSVP to Anne Rawn arawn@museumofcontemporaryart.ca by March 3\, space is limited. \nExact location details will be provided closer to the date of the studio visit. \nNep Sidhu’s art practice resides along a continuum comprised of conceptual and technical components originating from antiquity\, with relevance for the present. His sculptural practice combines language\, light-baring materials\, and incantation thus creating a third space that unifies endless parallels and possibilities. This work is informed by the interplay of script\, the poetic wave of architecture\, and an affinity for community. To date\, Sidhu has produced large-scale explorations around ancestor veneration\, the divine feminine\, and the intersection of myth and history. \nWith the divine feminine in mind\, along with a sense of pride and values that has become unbalanced in Sidhu’s ancestral home of Chakar\, Punjab. Sidhu and his family along with Davinder Singh have formed Sher-E-Punjab Academy as an institution of boxing and learning for the village youth of Chakar.  In addition to the physical regimen\, the students are also engaged by educational programming and life coaching. \nThe family’s focused approach to bring change to the community is by the empowerment of young girls\, who are the building blocks to their future. With boxing being the forefront of this initiative\, Sidhu explores the intersection of Ceremony and Sport through his textile and adornment practise under Paradise Sportif. It is here where Sidhu’s investigation into vestment and a non-commercial clothing line\, discloses the ideal conduct for maximum sustainability in contemporary spaces. The guiding principle is protect and exalt. Paradise Sportifreadies individuals (from women in the school to the arts collective Black Constellation and Shabazz Palaces) to engage with the sacred that exists within themselves and their environment. Aesthetic components drawn from myriad textile and ornament traditions which leverage\, reinforce\, and disguise ceremony. A dialogue between sport and ceremony upholds considerations around time\, place\, and divine connectivity. \nImage: Malcolm’s Smile\, 7a\, 7b\, 7 c 2015 Wool\, poly-cotton\, aluminum\, 150 x 96 x 15 in. each. Commissioned by the Frye Art Museum and funded by the Frye Foundation\, Douglas Smith. Courtesy of the Artist.

SUMMARY:Members’ Event: Studio visit with artist Rajni Perera
DESCRIPTION:Offered to moccamigos members \nmocamigo members are invited to visit the studio of the Canadian Artist Taking On The Global Art Market: Rajni Perera. \nArtist Biography: \nI explore issues of hybridity\, sacrilege\, irreverence\, the indexical sciences\, ethnography\, gender\, sexuality\, popular culture\, deities\, monsters and dream worlds. All of these themes marry in a newly objectified realm of mythical symbioses. They are flattened on the medium and made to act as my personal record of impossible discoveries. \nMy approach to the deconstruction of the non-European\, female body image\, delving into the miniaturist aesthetic as in “The New Ethnology”\, “The New Archaeology” and the “Yogini” series\, manifests itself in the form of re-appropriated religious icons. Leveraging embellished photographic portraiture as in “Maharajas” and “Maharanis” challenges contemporary notions of masculinity viewed through the non-European\, female lens.By painting these object-beings\, I am engaging in a discussion with the viewing audience about the aesthetic treatment of gender and the non-European sacred and secular body in a popular culture context. \nThese saccharine women and stoic men\, flaunting their blood\, breasts and armor around and throughout the stretched paper surface\, conceal violent stories and ideologies; a complex dichotomy that is not explored or discussed in internationally (or more particularly Western) circulated imagery of Hindu and Tantric gods and goddesses. It is much the same for the ethnic body image\, as represented in print media and online or screen culture. The semiology becomes reduced\, simplified and pared down to suit a blander ideological palette. \nIn my work\, I seek to open and reveal the dynamism of these icons\, both scripturally existent\, self-invented and externally defined. I am creating a subversive aesthetic that counteracts antiquated\, oppressive discourse\, and acts as a restorative force through which people can move outdated\, repressive modes of being towards reclaiming their power. \nLimited registration. RSVP required.

DESCRIPTION:Offered to moccamigos members \nmoccamigo members are invited to an evening at the studio of Nick Bierk and Charles Bierk. \n\n\nNick Bierk and Charles Bierk are Toronto-based artists who primarily work in oil on canvas. While a shared characteristic is the production of figurative paintings\, the conceptual elements explored within each practice are quite distinct.
