SUMMARY:THIS IS BREAKFAST: Featuring artist Jeremy Bailey
DESCRIPTION:This is Breakfast is our ongoing lecture series proudly presented by the moccamigos membership program. Join us for a light breakfast and a riveting talk by local artist and and self proclaimed ‘Famous New Media Artist’ Jeremy Bailey before the museum opens on Sunday morning! \nIt is a free event and open to the public. Jeremy will be giving a private tour of the current Douglas Coupland exhibition at MOCCA entitled Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything. Not to be missed! \nAbout Jeremy Bailey:\nSince the early noughties Bailey has ploughed a compelling\, and often hilarious\, road through the various developments of digital communications technologies. Ostensibly a satire on\, and parody of\, the practices and language of “new media\,” the jocose surface of Bailey’s work hides an incisive exploration of the critical intersection between video\, computing\, performance\, and the body (Morgan Quaintance\, Rhizome). \nRecent projects include performances for Rhizome’s Seven on Seven in New York\, The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Tate Liverpool. His work has been shown widely including recent solo shows at Transmediale in Berlin\, and group shows Mediamatic in Amsterdam\, Museums Quartier in Vienna and Balice Hertling in Paris. Recent commissions include projects for FACT in Liverpool\, Turner Contemporary in Margate UK\, and The New Museum in New York. Bailey is represented by Pari Nadimi Gallery in Toronto.

SUMMARY:Jon Sasaki: Bouncy Highrise
DESCRIPTION:Bouncy Highrise is a performance event in which a small crew of people will attempt to stack a tower of bouncy castles\, one on top of the other. This will take MOCCA’s courtyard. \nThe project organizers intend to draw attention to the numerous highrise towers that seemingly “spring up overnight” in the Queen St. W. neighbourhood\, redefining its character. \nThe inflatable castles may or may not stack tidily however\, and therein lies the crux of the piece. It might be quite sisyphean as the tower leans\, buckles\, deflates\, twists\, or tumbles. We cannot predict what will happen\, but it will be up to the performers to react in the moment with improvised problem solving and teamwork. The audience will be invited to watch from a safe barricaded vantage point\, as the 35 foot tall monumental tower is constructed. The castles would be tied to each other and secured to the adjacent brick wall as required\, so the tower could not topple in the direction of the audience. I imagine the event would be a nail-biter\, akin to watching a five-story tall game of Jenga. Failures would provide tragicomic relief from an earnest engineering endeavor. Ad hoc solutions would be plentiful as the crew attempted to overcome hurdles. \nThe project is aspirational in nature and will recall not only ambitious local architecture (condominiums\, CN Tower\, etc) but art historical works such as Brancusi’s Endless Column\, a piece cited by Derek Sullivan in his Villa contribution. Bouncy Highrise is intended as a serious response to Toronto’s recent exponentially increased urban density\, yet the performance maintains a tone of levity and playfulness. \nPresented by Jessica Bradley Gallery in association with MOCCA and Villa Toronto

SUMMARY:Model Minority Publication Preview with Gendai
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Vera Frenkel: Ways of Telling\, Gendai Gallery will introduce their most recent publication through a selection of readings\, which will take place around Frenkel’s immerse installation “…from the Transit Bar”. The publication titled Model Minority\, is an assemblage of the readings\, articles\, ephemera\, and archives discovered and created from a year-long programming series issued under the same name. \nThe programme Model Minority\, contests the self-pretence of a unified Canada built on a foundation of diversity and passive coexistence. Instead\, Gendai investigates a more radical version of a multicultural society through the lens of the “model minority”\, a figure that functions to stratify and reify cultural hierarchy while strengthening the template of supremacy relating to state/economic – colonial – power constructs. Model minority is a problematic concept that intersects deep within the ambiguity of the existing condition of multiculturalism in Canada. \nWithin the year\, the scope of Model Minority involved research\, workshops\, screenings\, and commissioned series that dissected the contradictory concept of model minority. Aptly\, the publication has been conceptualized as a ‘kit’ to be used as a functional resource for any pertinent\, future programs or discussions. “…from the Transit Bar” offers an ideal venue to preview the print-based iteration of Gendai’s nomadic\, process-based public platform for the production of new dialogue\, alliances and creative research.

SUMMARY:Pedro Ferreira: “Fragments 2014”
DESCRIPTION:A Derme live cinema event with media artist Pedro Ferreira and composer Allison Cameron (experimental music). \nIn a world of cross-fade songs with no space for silence\, we try to slow things down. A state of meditation and inner peace. Being conscious of space and time\, no rush for chord changes\, no rush for new sounds. Noise is music\, repetition is new information. Sampling from different sources\, we cross between media; analog and digital technologies come face-to-face\, questioning where we are now through rhythm and motion. The Derme live cinema collective believes in sharing and collaboration. We work together with visual and media artists\, performers\, musicians and sound designers\, poets and writers. Derme live cinema performance creates fire for the ears\, wind for the eyes and honey for the soul. \nPedro Ferreira (born in 1988\, Portugal) graduated in multimedia arts and culture from the University of Porto. His works are at the interface between media\, sound and visual arts. With the use of analog and digital technologies he creates experimental films\, audiovisual installations\, interventions and performances\, photography and documentary. Ferreira is the director of Derme live cinema performance. He transits from West to Eastern Europe to Canada. The socio-cultural and political environment is his impulse for creation which results in specific local community research and pro-active interaction. \nAllison Cameron is a Toronto composer and performer of experimental music. She improvises with and composes for Casio SK sampling keyboards\, ukulele\, banjo\, Honeytone amps\, radios\, crackle box\, cassette tapes\, found objects\, contact mics and guitar pedals. Using idiosyncratic performance techniques\, her work exposes an unpremeditated sound world. Her performances have been recorded for Musicworks Magazine\, Bug Incision and the Rat-drifting label. \nPresented by the Goethe-Institut\, the Images Festival and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art\nPart of the European Media Art Network Exchange with Australia and Canada 2014 & 2015\nSupported by the Cultural Programme 2013 of the European Commission\, the Goethe-Institut

SUMMARY:Ali Kazimi: Fair Play
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Vera Frenkel’s Transit Bar for a stereoscopic 3D screening of Ali Kazimi’s film Fair Play. \nAt the turn of the 20th century\, in response to mounting racial tensions in British Columbia\, the Canadian government restricted immigration by passing the Continuous Journey Provision of the Immigration Acts of 1908 and 1910. All subjects of the British Empire had freedom of movement within the Commonwealth; however\, the Canadian government effectively prohibited immigration from Asia by requiring all people to travel without stopping from the country of origin. In 1914\, a group of Indian entrepreneurs set out to directly challenge this law by chartering a steamship called the Komagata Maru. Upon arrival\, the passengers were detained on the ship for two months and departed only after the Canadian Government apprehended them with a navy cruiser. Upon arrival in India\, nineteen passengers were shot dead by British authorities. Several leaders were accused of sedition and we imprisoned or hanged. \nAli Kazimi has worked extensively to contextualize this incident by creating work that explores themes of race\, migration\, memory and history. While his award-winning documentary Continuous Journey (2004) is a meticulous archival project about the incident\, his most recent work\, Fair Play\, through ten quiet vignettes\, depicts the lives of ordinary people who were affected by the arrival\, detention and departure of the Komagata Maru. Fair Play provides a view into the private lives of South Asians on shore during a time of extreme racial tension. These works illustrate that the Komagata Maru Incident was not an isolated one\, but emblematic of the larger context of racist policies of the Canadian state and the attitudes of European settlers. \nFair Play opens a window to the past and allows viewer to feel as if they are in the presence of materially fathomable\, historically accurate\, life-sized peoples. With the immediacy and presence that only stereoscopic 3D moving images can evoke\, Kazimi asks the viewer to rethink history and immerse themselves into the spaces and lives of the characters. \nAli Kazimi is an award winning filmmaker\, critically acclaimed author and visual artist whose work deals with race\, social injustice\, migration\, history and memory. His documentaries include Narmada: A Valley Rises (1994)\, Shooting Indians: A Journey With Jeffrey Thomas (1997)\, Passage from India (1998)\, Continuous Journey (2004)\, Runaway Grooms (2006)\, Rex versus Singh (2009). His book Undesirables: White Canada and the Komagata Maru – An Illustrated History (Douglas & McIntyre) was a finalist for both the 2012 Vancouver Book Award. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Film\, School of Arts\, Media\, Performance and Design\, York University where he is also the principle investigator of the Stereoscopic 3D Lab.

DESCRIPTION:TO BE DISCUSSED PANEL SERIES: THE INNOVATORS\n As MOCCA embarks on a decisive moment in our evolution\, we are seizing the opportunity to initiate a timely conversation on the role and relevance of museums today through the exhibition TBD. Taken from the acronym ‘To Be Determined’\, this title describes the exhibition’s central theme: as the keepers of our culture\, a museum’s role and definition must evolve in tandem with a city’s cultural and social needs. \nSounding off from the previous panel (The Builders)\, the participants in The Innovators discussion will elaborate upon ways to contribute to community and culture and where the gaps may exist. \nIn the Toronto region\, a number of initiatives that are modest in scale and significant in endeavour innovate exhibitions\, projects and platforms. Small groups\, collectives and individuals are contributing to the creative and intellectual life of the city through resourcefulness and a special acuity to new voices and opportunities.
