DESCRIPTION:Tim Whiten is a Toronto-based creator of charged objects that embody myths and narratives\, bringing these stories alive and affirming their relevance to the times in which we live. \nWork by Tim Whiten is featured in MOCA’s inaugural exhibition\, BELIEVE. His incredible glass objects\, After Phaeton and Reliquaire\, embody narratives related to power\, belief\, continuity of being and understanding our place in the world. \nTim Whiten was born in Inkster\, Michigan and lives and works in Toronto. He is represented by Olga Korper Gallery. “I do not refer to myself as an Artist; I think of myself as an image maker who also creates cultural objects. In close to forty years creating works\, I have sought to navigate the territory of the human condition and its transformative potential.” \nWork by Tim Whiten featured in MOCA’s inaugural exhibition\, BELIEVE (on view until January 6\, 2019): \nAfter Phaeton\, 2013 \nHand-crafted crystal clear glass\, ionized glass\, brass fittings \nAfter Phaeton embodies the mythological tale of Phaeton\, son of the sun god Helios\, who begged his father to let him drive the horse-drawn chariot of the sun. In a daring act of arrogance\, Phaeton ignored his father’s cautionary warnings about the mighty powers of the chariot and crashed it into the earth\, setting the planet ablaze. While Whiten does not insist upon singular interpretations of his work\, After Phaeton can be understood in our current era as a lesson related to humility\, privilege and power. \nReliquaire\, 2012 \nHandcrafted crystal clear glass\, human skull\, gold leaf \nResembling the sacred architecture of a church or temple\, Reliquaire is a glass container that houses a human skull visible through a magnified lens. The skull\, as a container for the brain\, represents the locus of knowledge\, imagination and identity. Most often relics are the preserved remains of someone who may have achieved great and extraordinary things\, but the identity of this skull\, obtained through medical and academic sources\, is unknown. DESCRIPTION:Jeneen Frei Njootli is a Vuntut Gwich’in artist and a founding member of the ReMatriate Collective. In her interdisciplinary practice she uses media such as performance\, sound and textiles. Much of her work deconstructs the history of the materials she uses. She investigates their relationship to trade\, ceremonial regalia\, and the politics of First Nations art. Her cinematic-scale photograph Knowledge Transference IV is included in MOCA’s inaugural exhibition BELIEVE\, and she is shortlisted for the 2018 Sobey Art Award. \nNjootli’s live sound performances are sonic landscapes; frequencies and living energies that carry knowledge\, information and stories related to her personal experience and the world around her. \nJoin us for a special performance on Floor 1. DESCRIPTION:For over a decade Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen has been working in a variety of media and materials to create visual responses to challenges within today’s society. Migration and disempowerment are some of his main areas of research. Larsen’s work can be understood as visual anthropology. DESCRIPTION:April is the last month of Light Therapy! \nMondays and Wednesdays: 10:30-11:30am and 11:30am-12:30pm \nExposure to light is used as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD)\, milder winter blues and sleep disorders. Light therapy can improve our busy lives and make us feel happier. Visit once or as often as you need. Book the room for: \n\nMeetings\nBook clubs\nMeditation\nPrivate sessions\n\nLight Therapy reservations are only available to members. DESCRIPTION:How can culture and museums contribute to well-being in society? \nArchitect and artist\, Apolonija Šušteršič first installed Light Therapy in 1999 at Moderna Museet in Stockholm to explore how contemporary museums can act as a public space\, and as social spaces for wellbeing. \nBased in Toronto\, Aaron Labbé is determined to change the way we approach the treatment of mental health. Inspired by the lack of non-invasive therapy options\, Aaron created LUCID\, an immersive sensory experience that aims to help people cope with anxiety\, stress and depression\, as well as improve overall mental health. \nIn a conversation moderated by Paynter\, Šušteršič and Labbé will share their work and areas of concern\, and together consider how institutions can find ways to bridge disciplines and introduce ideas to improve public well-being. \nLight Therapy is the second project in the Art in Use series at MOCA. This year-long program presents works and public events that ask: Can art motivate social\, political and cultural change? What meaningful role does art play in our lives? How can we use it as a tool? \n  \nApolonija Šušteršič’s work is related to a critical analysis of space; usually focused on the processes and relationships between institutions\, cultural politics\, urban planning and architecture. Her broad-ranging interests stem from the study of space and continue its investigation into the social and political nature of our lived environment. She holds a PhD from the University of Lund\, Malmö Art Academy\, Sweden and is a professor in the Department of Art & Public Space art at Oslo National Academy for the Arts. She has participated in contemporary art institutions and events internationally. \nFor MOCA’s installation of Light Therapy\, we sought the advice of Aaron Labbé who has spent more than four years exploring non-invasive therapy options including light and sound. Labbé’s thesis project resulted in LUCID\, an immersive sensory experience designed to provide therapeutic support. LUCID is installed on Floor 1 of MOCA from January 18 – 27. \n#themuseumisnotwhatitusedtobe #lighttherapy #artinuse \nThis event is sold out! \nDepending on capacity\, there may be tickets available at the museum before the event.\nLUCID runs Jan. 18-27 and ‘Light Therapy’ is on view until April 30. \n  \n \nApolonija Šušteršič’\, Light Therapy\, 2018.

We are excited to present the works of Chantal Akerman and Basma Alsharif. Both artists share many concerns – geopolitical definitions\, the collapsing of histories and how we form individual versus collective memory. \nAkerman’s exhibition is the first time that her work is being shown in a museum in Toronto. \nLearn more about the artists: \nChantal Akerman\nAkerman is known for her impact on feminist filmmaking and avant-garde cinema. Her filmography includes the masterpiece Jeanne Dielman\, 23 quai du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)\, which she made when she was just 25 years old. \nNOW by Akerman creates a sense of being immersed in an arid landscape\, across five screens. Also on view is Akerman’s In The Mirror. \nBasma Alsharif\nBasma Alsharif’s exhibition intertwines four major works\, each one presented as a staged setting. DESCRIPTION:“They all dreamt of each other that  night\, as was natural…”* \n\nMOCA has invited artist and writer Lisa Steele to organize a series of talks and screenings that intersect\, interact\, or just plain act up with the lively resonances that exist between the iconic contemplations of Chantal Akerman and the deeply\, contemporary investigations of Basma Alsharif.\n\n  \nAnique Jordan speaks about her work as an artist\, a curator and a writer in Memory\, Urgency\, and Performing the Archive. \nAward-winning artist\, writer and curator\, Anique Jordan\, looks to answer the question of possibility in everything she creates. Working for over a decade at the crossroad of community economic development and art\, Jordan’s practice stems from and returns to the communities that inform it. As an artist\, Jordan’s work plays with the foundations of traditional Trinidadian carnival and the theory of hauntology challenging historical narratives and creating\, what she calls\, impossible images. She works across temporalities bringing historical data towards a contemporary analysis. This work creates space to reinterpret the archives offering a new and speculative vision of the future. Principally interested in Canadian histories which speak to Black Canada\, women\, working class communities and explores the relationships between Black and Indigenous peoples\, Jordan’s work ultimately questions the authority of the Canadian state. Jordan is the founder of Black Wimmin Artist\, a network of over 100 artists which recently organized The Feast- a gathering of 100 Black women and gender non-conforming artists held at the AGO. \nIn 2017 Jordan was awarded the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Artist of the year award\, she recently completed a 2017-2018 artist residency at the University of the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago) and is the 2018-19 Osgoode Hall Law School Artist-in-Residence. \n  \nToronto based Lisa Steele works in video\, photography\, film and performance as well as writing and curating on video and media arts. Her videotapes have been extensively exhibited nationally and internationally and some of Steele’s best known work has focused on the female body and its depiction in film. With long-time collaborator Kim Tomczak\, she co-founded Vtape; and is a recipient of the YWCA Woman of Distinction Achievement Award and the “Long Haul” Untitled Art Award\, and\, with Tomczak\, the Governor General’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Visual and Media Arts. \nThe event is free to attend\, but does require registration. SUMMARY:March Break Programming: 'Resolution (Mass of Clarity)' Clay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Resolution (Mass of Clarity)\nPA System\nFloor 1\n \nJoin us throughout March Break to create a clay miniature for the second phase of the workshop Resolution (Mass of Clarity) by art collective\, PA System. \n“Imagine a dream\, desire\, goal\, aspiration\, need\, resolution or hope that you have for yourself and mould it as a miniature.” \nOn Floor 1 of MOCA you can sculpt a clay representation of a need\, desire\, dream\, or goal to make your intention tangible. The exercise draws on strategies of visualization\, and is similar to sympathetic magic\, wherein symbolic representations – like a vision board – are used to influence real life. Anyone can participate in this growing installation of clay miniatures. \nThis project is an off-shoot from the artists’ ongoing work: Future Snowmachines in Kinngait (FSIK). As part of their ongoing project Embassy of Imagination\, Kinngait (Cape Dorset\, Nunavut) youth were asked to choose an object to represent their desire for mobility and connection to the land. They imagined and sculpted snowmobiles as play-dough miniatures. PA System translated the miniatures into larger sculptures through 3D printing\, and casting in scrap aluminum (from the remains of their burnt down high school). The sculptures are being sold to support the purchase of real snowmobiles and the establishment of the local Land and Cultural Leadership Program for youth. The initial iterations of FSIK were created with youth aged 13-16: Janice Qimirpik\, Moe Kelly\, David Pudlat\, Christine Adamie\, Lachaolasie Akesuk and Nathan Adla. \n  \nDrop in during museum hours to attend this workshop. \nMuseum hours: \nMonday 10am – 5pm\nTuesday Closed\nWednesday 10am – 5pm\nThursday 10am – 5pm\nFriday 10am – 9pm\nSaturday 10am – 5pm\nSunday 10am – 5pm \n \n\n\nPA System\, Resolution (Mass of Clarity)\, 2019.

DESCRIPTION:“They all dreamt of each other that night\, as was natural…”*\n  \nMOCA has invited artist and writer Lisa Steele to organize a series of talks and screenings that intersect\, interact\, or just plain act up with the lively resonances that exist between the iconic contemplations of Chantal Akerman and the deeply\, contemporary investigations of Basma Alsharif.\n\n\n  \n\nSerena Lee speaks about her work in video and performance in a talk entitled And Other Imaginary Lines. \nSerena Lee’s practice stems from a fascination with polyphony and its radical potential to map power\, perception\, and belonging. She plays with cinema\, voice\, text\, installation\, performance\, and conversation. Since 2010\, Serena has been collaborating as part of Read-in\, researching political\, embodied\, and situated practices of reading through shifting modes and disciplines; and more recently\, as SHATTERED MOON ALLIANCE with artist Christina Battle\, an ongoing sci-fi world-building project. Practising and collaborating internationally and close to home\, recent projects have been realized with transmediale/Embassy of Canada (Berlin)\, Nynnyt/Hanaholmen Cultural Centre (Helsinki)\, Cubitt Gallery (London)\, Gemaal Op Zuid (Rotterdam)\, Vtape\, Antimatter Film Festival (Victoria)\, Art Spin/Planet Storage\, Blackwood Gallery\, Whitechapel Gallery (London)\, Cow House Studios (Dublin)\, The Research Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale\, YYZ Artists’ Outlet\, Forest City Gallery (London\, ON)\, Images Festival\, FADO Performance/The Theatre Centre\, Regent Park Film Festival\, and Mountain Standard Time (Calgary). \nSerena is active in the Toronto arts community through involvement with the Board of Directors for Vtape\, Gendai Gallery\, and Trinity Square Video\, and professional roles with the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival and OCAD University. Serena holds an MFA from the Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam) and an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (CA). Serena is third-generation Chinese-Canadian and was born in Toronto. \n\n \nToronto based Lisa Steele works in video\, photography\, film and performance as well as writing and curating on video and media arts. Her videotapes have been extensively exhibited nationally and internationally and some of Steele’s best known work has focused on the female body and its depiction in film. With long-time collaborator Kim Tomczak\, she co-founded Vtape; and is a recipient of the YWCA Woman of Distinction Achievement Award and the “Long Haul” Untitled Art Award\, and\, with Tomczak\, the Governor General’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Visual and Media Arts.\n\n\nThe event is free to attend\, but does require registration. SUMMARY:March Break Programming: Break/ing Images Moving Image Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Muna Cann and artist Gustavo Artigas for an interactive video-making workshop inspired by Chantal Akerman and Basma Alsharif’s exhibitions at MOCA. \nPlayful and experimental in nature\, the workshop will explore the differences and similarities between video art and cinema. Participants in the workshop will have the chance to create collaborative short videos using footage from their smartphones as a means to inquire into traditional narrative film and how it might be disrupted. \nThe workshop will consist of the following: \n\nIntroduction – As a group\, participants will visit Akerman and Alsharif’s exhibitions.\nConversation – Cann and Artigas will lead a casual discussion about the methodologies of traditional cinema and video utilized in each exhibition.\nCollaboration & Presentation – Based on the observations made in the introductory discussions\, participants will collectively create a series of videos based on footage culled from their own personal smartphones. The created videos will be presented at the end of the workshop.\n\nEvent is free with museum admission and is all-ages. DESCRIPTION:“They all dreamt of each other that night\, as was natural…”*\n\nMOCA has invited artist and writer Lisa Steele to organize a series of talks and screenings that intersect\, interact\, or just plain act up with the lively resonances that exist between the iconic contemplations of Chantal Akerman and the deeply\, contemporary investigations of Basma Alsharif.\n  \n\nMoyra Davey presents her film Hemlock Forest (2016) which has a very explicit connection to Akerman’s 1977 work News From Home. \nMoyra Davey is an artist based in New York\, and whose work comprises the fields of photography\, film\, and writing. She has produced several works of film\, most recently Wedding Loop (2017) as part of her contribution to documenta 14 in Athens. She is the author of numerous publications including Burn the Diaries and The Problem of Reading\, and is the editor of Mother Reader: Essential Writings on Motherhood. Davey has been the subject of major solo exhibitions at institutions including Portikus\, Frankfurt/Main (2017); Bergen Kunsthall\, Norway (2016); Camden Arts Centre\, London (2014); Kunsthalle Basel (2010); and Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University\, Cambridge\, MA (2008). Her work is found in major public collections\, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York\, and Tate Modern in London. She was the 2018 recipient of the Scotiabank Photography Award\, and in 2004 was granted the Anonymous Was A Woman Award. \n \n\nToronto based Lisa Steele works in video\, photography\, film and performance as well as writing and curating on video and media arts. DESCRIPTION:“They all dreamt of each other that night\, as was natural…”*\n\nMOCA has invited artist and writer Lisa Steele to organize a series of talks and screenings that intersect\, interact\, or just plain act up with the lively resonances that exist between the iconic contemplations of Chantal Akerman and the deeply\, contemporary investigations of Basma Alsharif.\n\n  \n\nAllyson Mitchell and Deirdre Logue speak on their collaborative work as artists\, curators and founders of FAG (Feminist Art Gallery) in a talk entitled Hers Is Still a Dank Cave. \nDeirdre Logue and Allyson Mitchell share a collaborative maximalist art and life practice that includes art production\, exhibition and activism. Recently Logue and Mitchell presented Killjoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House. This epic installation/performance is a nightmarish vision of feminist terror where visitors are encouraged to dialogue about contemporary queer politics. They also collaborate on video installations that put radical feminist texts in conversation with contemporary queer theory using puppets\, cats and paper-mâché tactics. Since 2010 they have operated the F.A.G Feminist Art Gallery in Toronto Canada. Mitchell works as an Associate Professor in the School of Gender\, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at York University and Logue is currently the Development Director at Vtape. \n\n \n\nToronto based Lisa Steele works in video\, photography\, film and performance as well as writing and curating on video and media arts. SUMMARY:Reworking Storytelling: Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to participate in a collage art-making\, constructing\, and storytelling workshop inspired by Basma Alsharif’s exhibition. \nIn this workshop\, participants can create a layered collage inspired by an experience or memory. Tell a story using images\, learn the basics of composition and make new friends. \nRegistration is not required. The workshop takes around 45 minutes and includes a tour of Basma Alsharif’s exhibition. You are welcome to bring your own magazines and paper materials to use in your collage. \nWorkshop times are 1pm\, 2pm and 3pm on Floor 1.
