The exhibition looks beyond these to examine reciprocal ways that gay and mainstream representation have influenced each other\, and in doing so have contributed to shaping aspects of our culture and identities over the last several decades. Artworks from Over the Rainbow are drawn from the collection of Salah Bachir and Jacob Yerex.\nNational Gallery of Canada at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art program presents\, Par Amour/ Paramour\, an intimate portrayal of gay male sexuality and beauty in the face of mortality.

DESCRIPTION:Seeking Bones\n 	Live multi-media performance with song written by Cheryl L’Hirondelle \nWhat place do we occupy in the gallery? \nA survey of the gallery environment. \nSeeking Bones\, a new\, multi-media performance by Archer Pechawis will be presented on the occasion of the opening reception for TBD. Accompanied by his digital drum\, the artist will perform a song in his ancestral language\, Cree.   \nA survey of MOCCA from the Pleistocene to Anthropocene\, Seeking Bones considers MOCCA from cultural\, chronological\, geological\, and hydrological perspectives. \n“My current fascination is what I call ‘transitional Cree culture’\, the place where Cree culture meets the onrush of millennial technology. I explore this fascination in performance. Using digital technologies I attempt to locate and query this meeting place\, however fleeting. My work is a temporary roadmap. These maps are signposts of the moment\, which I create to share.” – A.P. \nArcher Pechawis is a media-integrated performing artist\, New Media artist\, writer\, curator\, teacher and dad. He has been creating solo performance works since 1984. His practice investigates the intersection of Plains Cree culture and digital technology.

DESCRIPTION:Brewtality of Fact Beer Club – Meeting 4\n 	The public is invited to join the Brewtality of Fact Beer Club and attend any of a series of meetings where members will drink\, discuss and explore the experience of Brew Pub #3. The fourth and final meeting in this series will take place at MOCCA and will include presentations from Gina Badger and The STAG Library\, moderated by cheyanne turions. \nPresented with the support of No Reading After the Internet. Open to the general public\, no reservation is necessary. Membership and attendance fee can be purchased at the door. \n 	About the Brewtality of Fact Beer Club: \nThe purpose of The Brewtality of Fact is the testing\, exhibition and judging of the beer made by our members. \nThe beer consumed at our meetings is never sold\, but rather shared. In exchange\, members commit to offering frank feedback on the quality of the homebrew\, including its aroma\, taste\, appearance and palate. \nTo Join: \nMeetings are open to all members of the Brewtality of Fact Beer Club. Registration is limited to 7 persons/meeting. *Note: a limited quantity of beer is available at each meeting \nBeer Club membership will be available for purchase online as of Saturday\, September 6. \nFor all other inquiries\, contact thebrewtalityoffact@gmail.com. \n 	Brew Pub #3\nRelanding from Mugwort \nGina Badger (with Eric Emery\, brewmaster\, and cheyanne turions; the STAG Library\, editors) \nThe STAG Library (artists Aja Rose Bond & Gabriel Saloman\, Vancouver) in collaboration with artist and writer Gina Badger (Toronto)\, curator cheyanne turions and brewmaster Eric Emery will be launching the 3rd edition of Brew Pub\, a journal in the form of a beer whose contents\, labeling and other printed and online material constitute the contents of the publication. \nThis edition explores a relationship with Artemisia vulgaris\, commonly known as mugwort\, an invasive species which has spread from Eurasia across Canada\, flourishing in urban spaces that have been altered by human intervention such as abandoned lots\, rail-yards and roadsides. Mugwort has deep roots in indigenous European medicine\, relieving fatigue\, promoting lucid dreams and acting as an abortifacient. Mugwort also has been used in Gruit beers as a substitute for hops in traditional brewing processes. \nThrough the development of a beer using wild-crafted mugwort from the city of Toronto\, land with which the Huron\, Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe people have a long\, historic and profound relationship\, these artists consider what and how mugwort can teach those exploring the conflictual complexity of settlement. Mugwort can talk to us about taking root in place\, connecting with traditions across distances and back in time\, and how to cultivate these teachings in the present\, renewing our relationship to place and that which grows here. \n 	Image: Courtesy Gina Badger

She has curated exhibitions at the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa)\, the Ottawa Art Gallery (Ottawa) and the Blackwood Gallery (Mississauga). She is currently a Curatorial Assistant at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery. \nShannon Linde (MMSt\, Museum Studies; BFA Studio Art) is an artist\, designer\, and arts professional living in Toronto. She has exhibited work at the Museum of Art+Design (Los Angeles)\, Nuit Blanche (Toronto)\, and the Gladstone Hotel (Toronto). She has curated and coordinated exhibitions at the University of Toronto Art Centre (Toronto)\, and La Pharmacie Esperanza (Montréal). \nPatricia Ritacca (MA\, Art History; BA Art History & English Literature) is a Toronto-based curator and arts professional. She has curated exhibitions at the University of Toronto Art Centre and Art Interiors (Toronto). She has assisted in the curation of exhibitions for the City of Toronto (TO Live With Culture) and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto). \nRenée van der Avoird (MMSt\, Museum Studies; BA French Language and Literature\, Fine Arts) is a writer and curator based in Toronto and Barrie. She has organized exhibitions at the MacLaren Art Centre\, University of Toronto Art Centre and Susan Hobbs Gallery (Toronto). Renée currently holds the position of Assistant Curator/Registrar at the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie.

SUMMARY:Vera Frenkel: Ways of Telling Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Vera Frenkel: Ways of Telling is a comprehensive presentation of the work of the Toronto-based artist whose interdisciplinary approach to video\, performance\, sculpture\, printmaking\, and installations has earned widespread international acclaim. The exhibition showcases rarely seen early works such as The Storyteller’s Device\, alongside more recent projects such as ONCE NEAR WATER: Notes from the Scaffolding Archive\, and the monumental\, multichannel video/photo project\, The Blue Train. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Vera Frenkel: Ways of Telling\, Gendai Gallery will introduce their most recent publication through a selection of readings\, which will take place around Frenkel’s immerse installation “…from the Transit Bar”. The publication titled Model Minority\, is an assemblage of the readings\, articles\, ephemera\, and archives discovered and created from a year-long programming series issued under the same name. \nThe programme Model Minority\, contests the self-pretence of a unified Canada built on a foundation of diversity and passive coexistence. Instead\, Gendai investigates a more radical version of a multicultural society through the lens of the “model minority”\, a figure that functions to stratify and reify cultural hierarchy while strengthening the template of supremacy relating to state/economic – colonial – power constructs. Model minority is a problematic concept that intersects deep within the ambiguity of the existing condition of multiculturalism in Canada. \nWithin the year\, the scope of Model Minority involved research\, workshops\, screenings\, and commissioned series that dissected the contradictory concept of model minority. Aptly\, the publication has been conceptualized as a ‘kit’ to be used as a functional resource for any pertinent\, future programs or discussions. “…from the Transit Bar” offers an ideal venue to preview the print-based iteration of Gendai’s nomadic\, process-based public platform for the production of new dialogue\, alliances and creative research.

SUMMARY:Jon Sasaki: Bouncy Highrise
DESCRIPTION:Bouncy Highrise is a performance event in which a small crew of people will attempt to stack a tower of bouncy castles\, one on top of the other. This will take MOCCA’s courtyard. \nThe project organizers intend to draw attention to the numerous highrise towers that seemingly “spring up overnight” in the Queen St. W. neighbourhood\, redefining its character. \nThe inflatable castles may or may not stack tidily however\, and therein lies the crux of the piece. It might be quite sisyphean as the tower leans\, buckles\, deflates\, twists\, or tumbles. We cannot predict what will happen\, but it will be up to the performers to react in the moment with improvised problem solving and teamwork. The audience will be invited to watch from a safe barricaded vantage point\, as the 35 foot tall monumental tower is constructed. The castles would be tied to each other and secured to the adjacent brick wall as required\, so the tower could not topple in the direction of the audience. I imagine the event would be a nail-biter\, akin to watching a five-story tall game of Jenga. Failures would provide tragicomic relief from an earnest engineering endeavor. Ad hoc solutions would be plentiful as the crew attempted to overcome hurdles. \nThe project is aspirational in nature and will recall not only ambitious local architecture (condominiums\, CN Tower\, etc) but art historical works such as Brancusi’s Endless Column\, a piece cited by Derek Sullivan in his Villa contribution. Bouncy Highrise is intended as a serious response to Toronto’s recent exponentially increased urban density\, yet the performance maintains a tone of levity and playfulness. \nPresented by Jessica Bradley Gallery in association with MOCCA and Villa Toronto

Ostensibly a satire on\, and parody of\, the practices and language of “new media\,” the jocose surface of Bailey’s work hides an incisive exploration of the critical intersection between video\, computing\, performance\, and the body (Morgan Quaintance\, Rhizome). \nRecent projects include performances for Rhizome’s Seven on Seven in New York\, The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Tate Liverpool. His work has been shown widely including recent solo shows at Transmediale in Berlin\, and group shows Mediamatic in Amsterdam\, Museums Quartier in Vienna and Balice Hertling in Paris. Recent commissions include projects for FACT in Liverpool\, Turner Contemporary in Margate UK\, and The New Museum in New York. Bailey is represented by Pari Nadimi Gallery in Toronto.

DESCRIPTION:Curator and artist Chris Wiley with exhibition artists Ellen Carey\, Josh Tonsfeldt and Ryan Foerster\, will give a tour of Part Picture\, exploring alternative processes in lens- based practices. \nEllen Carey is an internationally recognized photo-based artist and uses a large-format Polaroid 20×24 camera to create her well-known Pulls and site-specific installations. Considered a pioneer in the cameraless photogram and lens-based Polaroid photographic and contemporary art field\, Carey is also an independent scholar\, writing under her practice Pictus & Writ in the tradition of artist-on-artist. Carey lives and works in Connecticut. \nRyan Foerster embraces chance and the transformative effects of time\, weather\, and other organic processes in the making of his abstract photographs\, typically placing light-sensitive paper on the ground outdoors for extended periods of time or covering the paper with dirt\, leaves or food scraps. His multidisciplinary exhibitions often include a combination of sculptures\, films/videos\, and handmade ‘zines. Foerster lives and works in New York. He received an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. \nChris Wiley is an artist and writer. He has made photographs that depict vernacular architecture\, particularly in the Los Angeles area. His latest series\, titled Dingbats\, emphasizes the physical qualities of the images by framing them in discordant materials like industrial carpeting\, stucco\, and vinyl flooring. Wiley draws connections between image and object while maintaining the seemingly arbitrary nature of the conflations.
