MOCCA Presents Two Toronto Premieres!
TORONTO, Ont., August 26, 2010 – The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is pleased to announce the launch of our Fall 2010 programming season with the Toronto premiere of David Hoffos’ exhibition Scenes from the House Dream from September 10 – December 31, and the North American premiere of Chris Chong Chan Fui and Yasuhiro Morinaga’s film installation HEAVENHELL, from September 10 -19. The opening reception will take place on September 10, from 7-10 p.m.
David Hoffos’ ongoing practice explores the uncanny and its relationship to the everyday; he creates narratives that transcend time and place. In Scenes from the House Dream, Hoffos transforms the MOCCA Mainspace into a dark corridor of sound, light and living cinema. As viewers make their way through the corridor Hoffos asks us to suspend disbelief and enter his world; what we find there may both disturb and delight.
For his renowned film High and Low (1963) Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa was unable to shoot the slum scene on the infamous brothel streets of Koganecho, Yokohama as it was considered much too dangerous for his cast and crew. Presented in MOCCA’s Project Room, HEAVENHELL is a six-channel audio-video installation that restages the stylized scene in the location Kurosawa originally intended. Recruiting local youth in the now cleaned-up neighbourhood, Chris Chong Chan Fui and Yasuhiro Morinaga create a suspenseful conflation triptych where the present exhumes the past.
David Hoffos: Scenes from the House Dream is curated by Shirley Madill, and is organized and circulated by the Rodman Hall Art Centre/Brock University with the assistance of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge and TrepanierBaer Gallery, Calgary. HEAVENHELL is curated by Andréa Picard, and presented in collaboration with the Toronto International Film Festival’s Future Projections Programme with the support of The Japan Foundation, Toronto.
Admission to these exhibitions is FREE thanks to the support of the Hal Jackman Foundation.

• Scenes from the House Dream represents the first time David Hoffos has presented this entire body of work under one roof. The exhibition has toured nationally, and was presented earlier this year at the National Gallery of Canada.
• Future Projections is an initiative of the Toronto International Film Festival. This year’s expanded Future Projections programme, which includes installations and projects from internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, is linked to Essential Cinema, the inaugural exhibition at TIFF Bell Lightbox that opens on September 12.
