British Invasion at MOCCA
TORONTO, Ontario, January 29, 2012 – The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is pleased to announce the launch of our Winter 2013 programming season with ARE YOU ALRIGHT? New Art From Britain and Phil Collins they shoot horses, from February1-March 24, 2013. The opening reception will take place on February 1, from 8-10 p.m. Artist talks on Saturday, February 2, 1 pm, with Boo Saville speaking on the topic: “Here, There and Elsewhere,” followed by a Q&A with Dawn Mellor, Harry Burden and James Unsworth.
ARE YOU ALRIGHT? is a group exhibition featuring a new generation of British art in the post- YBA (Young British Artists) era. Their work manifests in a complex, humorous, and at times, masterful reaction to the trend of disillusionment within contemporary British society. It features the work of twelve emerging and established artists, Caroline Achaintre, Jonathan Baldock, Harry Burden, Clem Crosby, Graham Dolphin, Elizabeth Eamer, Laura Oldfield Ford, Tom Gidley, Dawn Mellor, Justin Mortimer, Boo Saville, and James Unsworth. ARE YOU ALRIGHT? New Art From Britain is curated by Derek Mainella and Elizabeth Eamer and organized and presented by MOCCA. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated, magazine-style publication designed by Eamer with an insightful text by Toronto-based writer Jodie James Elliot.
For our widely acclaimed National Gallery of Canada at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art program, MOCCA presents Phil Collins they shoot horses, which is inspired by the Depression-era craze of dance marathons portrayed in both Horace McCoy’s 1935 novel and Sydney Pollack’s 1969 film adaptation They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?. In they shoot horses, Phil Collins staged his own eight-hour dance marathon in Ramallah with nine Palestinian youths. With a soundtrack that features pop artists such as Diana Ross, Beyoncé, Joy Division and Olivia Newton John, this installation simulates the atmosphere of a nightclub, where the audience witnesses, and may even dance along with, the participants as they pass through states of enthusiasm, exhilaration, exhaustion and sheer determination. Phil Collins they shoot horses is organized by MOCCA and the National Gallery of Canada.
