NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA AT THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN ART

Human / Nature features a selection of sculptures, drawings and textiles drawn from the National Gallery of Canada’s permanent collections of contemporary Canadian, international and indigenous art. Each work presents an example of symbiosis between humanity and nature, artistically explored through mythology, cultural history and oral traditions. Ah Xian’s porcelain busts imbue family members, friends and other sitters with the weight of Chinese iconography while Ed Pien’s incised drawings evoke the ancient Chinese art of paper cutting (jiǎn zhǐ). Inuit stories inspire Marion Tuu’luq’s wallmounted quilts, which hang near a sculpture by Arnaqurk Ashevak, an experimental “self-portrait” showing a branch sprouting from the artist’s hand.
