February 13, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Members' Preview

Explore the works of Chantal Akerman and Basma Alsharif in a new and immersive experience.

MOCA Toronto welcomes you to our new winter 2019 (February-April) programming. We are excited to present the works of Chantal Akerman and Basma Alsharif. Both artists share many concerns – geopolitical definitions, the collapsing of histories and how we form individual versus collective memory.

Akerman’s exhibition is the first time that her work is being shown in a museum in Toronto.

Learn more about the artists:

Chantal Akerman
Akerman is known for her impact on feminist filmmaking and avant-garde cinema. Her filmography includes the masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), which she made when she was just 25 years old.

NOW by Akerman creates a sense of being immersed in an arid landscape, across five screens. Also on view is Akerman’s In The Mirror.

Basma Alsharif
Basma Alsharif’s exhibition intertwines four major works, each one presented as a staged setting. Using many different media, she takes us on journeys into the collective subconscious, exploring the tools we all use to understand the ghosts of history.

At the centre of the exhibition is A Philistine, inviting you to settle into an armchair and enter a story travelling back in time.

Don’t forget to visit these interactive exhibitions on view:
