Courtyard Mural
Although public in location and spatially and architecturally dependant in nature, Maya Hayuk’s work is more closely aligned with Abstract Expressionism’s emphasis on dynamic, energetic gesture and reflective, cerebral focus on open fields of colour than street art. Conversely, the work does share the qualities of vibrant energy and unique visual language that develop from working in a time limited and impulse driven manner. As is typical in her practice, Hayuk’s mural P.M.A. is a unique painting created entirely on, and for the site. The artist works wholly by hand and vision. Improvised in response to the surface and location, Hayuk has incorporated the existing features of the wall into the mural – giving a clever nod to the milieu.
Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk earned a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 1991 and has studied at the University of Odessa, Odessa, Ukraine, and at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. Hayuk’s work has been the subject of one-person exhibitions and commissions internationally, including at Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, the Netherlands (2012); Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York (2011) and the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro (2011). Most recently Hayuk completed a project for the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In Toronto, the artist is represented by Cooper Cole Gallery.
