MOCCA and Art Toronto 2011 Publish a Limited Edition Print by Toronto-based photographer Edward Burtynsky!
TORONTO, Ont., September 21, 2011 – The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and Art Toronto 2011 are pleased to announce the publication of a limited edition print by Toronto-based photographer Edward Burtynsky to benefit exhibitions and educational programming at MOCCA. This extraordinary image by one of Canada’s most internationally renowned artists will be sold exclusively at MOCCA’s booth (#1210) during Art Toronto, October 28 – 31, 2011, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. With ONLY 25 prints available for $3,500 each (mounted, not framed) they will be sure to sell quickly.
This year’s limited edition print, Dryland Farming #13, Monegros County, Aragon, Spain, 2010, is from the series MONEGROS: DRYLAND FARMING – SPAIN. In 2010, Burtynsky photographed agricultural areas in Spain including Monegros, a hilly, semi-desert region with extreme climatic conditions. Drawn by the organic expansion of farming areas created by successive divisions of land, he became fascinated with the extraordinary visual complexity of Monegros and he recorded these aerial views from a rented helicopter. The resulting photographs represent some of his most abstract and seemingly painterly work to date. Although these astonishing landscapes appear cosmic, the writhing lines, bold patches of colour, texture and rendition of detail also suggest microscopic organisms.
In April 2011, Edward Burtynsky was awarded the biennial MOCCA Award in Contemporary Art for his extraordinarily unique bodies of work produced over the course of nearly three decades. Combining knowledge of photography, its history and techniques, with an astute perceptual rigour, Burtynsky creates stunning images of sites of some of the heaviest and most essential industrial activities in Canada and around the world.
Edward Burtynsky’s Dryland Farming #13, Monegroes County, Spain, is the third MOCCA Benefit Edition artist commission produced by Art Toronto and MOCCA. Since participating in the fair in 2002, MOCCA has commissioned and produced new work and projects by some of Canada’s most exciting contemporary artists, including limited edition prints by Jason Mclean in 2009 and Alex McLeod in 2010, and projects by Kent Monkman, Diane Borsato, John Boehme, Steven Laurie and others.
All proceeds from the sale of the Benefit Edition support exhibitions and educational programming at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art.
