The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Su-Ying Lee to the position of Assistant Curator.

Su-Ying Lee received a M.A. in Visual Studies, Curatorial (2011) and a B.A. in Art and Art History (2003) from the University of Toronto, and recently completed a one-year curatorial residency at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. Her institutional work experience includes assignments with the Art Gallery of Mississauga, the Blackwood Gallery, and the Canadian Art Foundation.

As a curator of contemporary art, Lee has both institutional experience and a number of independent projects to her credit. She has curated exhibitions that include the work of Kent Monkman and Lawrence Weiner and commissioned the work of Harrell Fletcher and Wendy Red Star. Lee is interested in the role of curator as co-conspirator, accomplice and active agent. She seeks new ways to mobilize art, audiences and context. Recent projects include her thesis exhibition The Good Host (2011), which took place in four public locations across Toronto and in Mississauga, including the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. Her most recent curatorial project Cuitlacoche (presented by the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery) is a yearlong (2012-2013), cross-disciplinary program which examines contentious aspects of food production and distribution through a garden installation by artist Ron Benner, downloadable mp3 food tours and a moderated public talk. Currently, Lee is working with artist, and author of Support Structures, Celine Condorelli to develop a site-responsive, utilitarian project in Hart House, an extra-curricular hub where the University of Toronto community interfaces with the general public.

The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art received over 200 applications from across North America for this position. ”It was a very strong field, and we are absolutely thrilled with our candidate. She is a great addition to our curatorial team as we gear up for our next stage of growth,” says David Liss, Artistic Director and Curator.

Su-Ying Lee started work at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art on January 7, 2013.
